A Mini Blog where i share some thoughts on weddings and my experiences and those of the couples that book me to shoot their wedding video
The year of the workshops!
Where do i start? This is my first blog post in about 2 years! It feels so weird to be taking time to write about a photography experience rather than a wedding video !
Coming up to the end of 2016 I decided i wanted to do a few workshops to “turn the dial” with my work a bit. Most of this involved looking for workshops across Europe as there is not much happening in Ireland for video. A chance conversation with Tomasz Kronas while working together for the first time led me to find out about a wedding photography workshop in Ireland .
Don’t follow the crowd
It takes a long time to find your own voice, in fact i wonder do we ever? We are surrounded by so many influences these days you need to be careful what your brain is ingesting as it all influences your work. At different stages we look for guidance, others for inspiration……..I found myself looking for the later as last year was coming to an end.
In review the year had been great, but I know i’m capable of more and also capable of making my own job easier whilst improving.
My minimalist lust
I had become weary of all the gadgets and gear i was bringing to weddings, and the first thing that hit me was how “free” some of the great photographers that i worked with seemed to be. And this is where i circle back to the workshop. The workshop was a tipping point or pivot point for me. In SO many ways. Oh boy. First I nearly didn’t go as the planets tried to conspire against me on the first day [...]
Arlene got in touch with me last year and asked was I interested in coming up to Carndonagh in Donegal to shoot their wedding video. After checking out the scenery around her hometown i was super excited about the prospects!
Donegal Wedding Video
I traveled up the night before, had a quick look at the church and then found my accommodation. The next morning i was up early capturing some beautiful shots and it was just as well i did, as the weather turned very bad for the day . But hey, that was not going to stop Arlene and Lee from having a blast.
Being the true optimist I am i kept on saying ” It might clear up later” . No one agreed. But low and behold someone was looking down on the couple as after their speeches the skies cleared and i asked them if they wanted to take advantage and head down to the beach for some shots with just themselves. On the drive home that night i knew i have captured something special and was quietly happy.
Arlene contacted me a few weeks later with some bad news. Unfortunately a personal tragedy for Lee’s family meant the video would have extra significance. Times like this make me realize how important the memories I capture are to people. Thankfully, most times it just takes us a bit longer to realize it.
Kim and Brian on the lawn at Cabra Castle
Cabra Castle Wedding Video
This is not the first time i was the videographer at Cabra Castle, and i love shooting here. So many lovely spots to get great footage and i was working with Darren Purcell a very talented photographer too.
Before the reception there was a lovely mass from the very colorful parish priest before we headed off in convoy for the venue in Kingscourt, Co.Cavan to get some lovely footage for this wedding video cabra castle.
We had a lovely photo shoot at Cabra Castle before Kim and Brian had some time to mingle with their guests and enjoy their wedding reception. I always tell couples to make sure they allow enough time to be able to spend 30-45 minutes with family and friends before entering the room for their meal.
When i left the dance floor was packed and from what i have heard the party continued long into the night.
Ciara and Keith first came across me at a wedding fair in the RDS in January 2013. They liked my personalised style of wedding video and we had a quick chat before they decided to book me there an then for their wedding video Dunboyne Castle .
Dunboyne Castle Wedding Video
This is not the first time i was the videographer at Dunboyne Castle, so i am familiar with the staff and venue. Always helpful when your not second guessing locations for photos and video. Eric Ronan was the photographer on the day and i have worked with Eric many times now, another video friendly photographer.
We had a lovely church ceremony in Finglas village before we headed back to Dunboyne Castle for the wedding reception where John was on hand to greet the newly weds. There were a few surprises in store for the guests during the speeches, where we had not 1 but 2 songs !
After the speeches it was on to the dance floor for the finale and the crowd did not disappoint me with their dance moves. What made it extra special was that Keiths brother was the front man of the band. You can leave a comment for the couple below if you like.
Nothing beats a family get together at Christmas time. And it was so for Stephanie and Michael who decided to get married 4 days before Christmas in Rathveigh Church and then onto the sumptuous Ballymagarvey Village for their wedding reception. When i arrived at Stephanies brothers gorgeous house at Eaton Square makeup artist Ailbhe Lynch was busy putting the finishing touches to the girls makeup. Ailbhe is always a pleasure to work with and considerate of the timing needed for the bride to get photos and video before we leave for the church to setup. Another team player.
There was a lovely Christmas spirit in the house with the decorations and excitement from the kids with Christmas only four days away. As i headed off to the church i could see the clouds begin to darken but luckily i was able to get some lovely establishing shots before the rain came. By the time Stephanie arrived it was pouring down but it kind of added to the excitement as the couple were not going to let the weather dampen the spirits. Indeed those spirits were lifted be the always impressive voice of Nikki Kavanagh who really added to the ceremony with some beautiful songs.
Wedding in Ballymagarvey Village
After a beautiful ceremony by a local priest and friend from Michaels parish we all headed back to this wedding in Ballymagarvey Village where John Regan and the team were awaiting the arrival of Stephanie and Michael. Unfortunately the rain persisted but it did not put the crowd off who were intent on having a great time. We had some lovely speeches before the band got the real party started and Michael really showed us some dancing [...]
Wedding Videos in the Old Days……
In the old days, a wedding video was just an 8mm long running clip of the entire wedding which showed the entire service from start to finish. We saw the bride walking down the aisle (usually from the back) and maybe a shot of the bouquet being thrown.
Videography Styles Today:
But today, you have more choices than ever in how you want your wedding video done. It truly is all up to you. Here are some of the ways you could have your video filmed today which will be a treasure you will always cherish. While there is no cookie-cutter formula for the perfect wedding video to capture your day, these ideas may get you started to thinking about how you wish to portray your special day. Talk to a videographer employing modern videography styles to learn more about how you can preserve your special day. Don’t just live it-preserve it!
With themed weddings, you can choose the overall theme of your wedding which can reflect the personality of the bride and groom, a location or setting you both love, or some special moment you shared, reflected in your wedding video. This approach is dramatic and unique because it captures a season, event, or theme which is a big part of your life.
This type of wedding video can be a mix of the best moments of a wedding, or it can focus on the most important aspects, which the bride and groom decide beforehand. Key elements of the wedding are usually included in this type of wedding video, such as the walk down the aisle, the kiss, the exit to the getaway car, [...]
I have been thinking for a long time that i’d like to bring a more relaxed and carefree opportunity to my couples to tell their stories and engagement videos are the best option for couples before they get married. Of course you can also tell your story to the world if your not getting married and the beauty of these shoots is that they can take any form at all. We are not restricted in any way. The funny thing is the first Pre wedding video or engagement video i have done is with a family , Claire and Barry have 2 kids and I was keen to have them involved as they are one of the biggest parts of their story. Find out how Barry stood Claire up for 20 mins on their first date! And when they had their first kiss.
The Four of Us
If you like you can arrange to have these playing on a small TV in a quiet area at your wedding reception. Some couples opt to use the video as a save the date and send word of the upcoming wedding out through social media and email. If an engagement video sounds like fun then get in touch today and lets make your idea into a script first ! If you have any suggestions leave a comment below.
Todays video is from Co Leitrim, it is another wedding video from Lough Rynn where i was the videographer for Caroline and David previously. Its Debbie and Morvens turn now and the sun shone brightly for them.
Both of them were getting ready in the hotel so that made things extra special as i was able able to capture the grooms preparation too. A nice bonus when it happens. The ceremony was in St Patricks Church, Mohill. A lovely church in the center of the town. I will never forget the priests homily, it still makes my hair stand on my arms. The priest was a local from Morvens beloved Mayo and he put a lot of thought into it.
Wedding Video Lough Rynn
Back at the hotel the wedding speeches were equally emotional with Morvens best man giving a real honest speech about his “Best Friend”. The wedding video ended with a lovely bit of Irish dancing by Debbie and her girls with Morven and the lads joining in at the end. You can see most of this in the video highlights that follow………
Aisling and Gavin got married in the wonderful Village at Lyons wedding venue just off the Lyons Road, Celbridge, Co. Kildare.
They had come home from England to get married in an intimate civil ceremony in the beautiful conservatory in the venue.
Village at Lyons Wedding Video
The girls and the lads both got ready in the beautiful houses on the property and i must say it was a pleasure to work in such great space and with an abundance of light, it really made the job a lot easier. Although it was my first visit to this venue it is definitely one o fell in love with myself. and i look forward to my next village at lyons wedding video.

Wedding Ceremony: Faithlegg Church, Faithlegg, Waterford
Wedding Video : Faithlegg House Hotel, Waterford
“By Hook or by Crook”
Before i filmed this wedding i never understood the meaning of “By hook or by crook” and to be honest i never even knew it was related to Waterford. Ah the things you learn on road as a wedding videographer.
Gillian and Alan found me through a quick google search after which Gillian contacted me to tell me how much she liked my wedding video style. It would mean my first visit to Faithlegg House Hotel in Waterford to film a wedding ( I have played golf there previously ) so i was delighted as variety is the spice of life. And never more so when it comes to filming wedding videos. Gillian had also enquired about her wedding makeup from Lida, my partner but decided in the end to use a local girl .
We had a beautiful ceremony in the gorgeous church opposite the hotel. You could tell from the reflection and from the readings that Gillian and Alan had put a lot of thought into this wedding ceremony. Gillians brother sang during communion and that even made it into the wedding video highlights. Afterwards the guests all got to gorge on some lovely cool ice creams outside the church before making their way over the road to the wedding reception.
The hotel was looking beautiful in the late august sunshine. The kids were due back in school, so there was little doubt we’d get sunshine! Still, Gillians mother had her child of Prague outside the house. No chances been taken here. The evening entertainment was provided by the very popular band, Springbreak who had the floor packed when it [...]
